Getting photos OUT of iPhoto

Two things;
Both seem to do what they say on the wrapper, so out of iPhoto and into Fedora Repository.

Why?
  • I want more metadata than the filesystem can easily handle.
  • I want my potos around for a long time.
What would you do?
